To be successful in business, good communication skills and self-confidence are really essential, and this is applicable to everything in life, from your self-image and even your personal activities to your profession. It is necessary that you be equipped with these qualities, because they enable you communicate so well that people get influenced by your words.
NLP was originally developed for agents such as businessmen and women to communicate and persuade. For you to be a successful business or influential person, communication and persuasion are very vital tools which are indeed indispensable. Generally, it entails choosing your words carefully, knowing how to speak with gestures in a non-verbal manner and so on.
Words which are often referred to as ‘magic words’ or ‘power words’ can be used to evoke certain feelings and emotions and responses that help overcome objections. For instance, to ’conjure’ positive emotions, words like happy, joy, believe and success maybe be helpful. To ‘conjure’ curiosity try words like secret, think, truth and imagine. For instance, if you say ‘Can I tell you a secret?’, you have indirectly invoked a sense of curiosity in the person being spoken to.
The first key to mastering communication is active Listening
In modern life, where everyone seems busy and short of time, paying attention to someone is very rare. Also, in very serious topics, a conversation may become a competition for airspace. By listening to someone you ensure rapport, invariably and relationship. By listening diligently to your customer you can learn their language type and use same in addressing them so as to develop rapport.
NLP techniques for persuasion
Appeal to their Identity: Who you are and how you see yourself is a vital influence tool, perhaps the most important one. Influence them positively and show them the best of you.
Invoke emotions: Positive emotions like hope, love, anticipation and fun are necessary in your attempt to persuade. Negative emotions like disgust, loneliness and anger can as well spur people into action.
Embedded commands: For instance, if I say, “Let’s go to the mall” it is more difficult to resist than when I say “would you want us to go to the mall?”. Although it is more polite to say the latter but it is an essential way to persuade.
Ask questions: when you ask a lot of questions you get the person involved in the conversion and by so doing they are prone to being easily convinced and persuaded.
Restricting the choice: Consider these two questions critically “Red or White wine?”, and “Which wine would you like?”. You will see that the first question gives illusion of choice but indirectly limits your choice more than the second question.
Reframe possible objections: Think of what of what would stop someone from doing what you want them to do, and the possible anxiety they could feel by doing what you want them to do. Write down all possible objections and draw a map on how to tackle them before approaching the person to make the demand.
“But” and “And”: ‘But’ as a word has far reaching effects than it appears on the surface. So you need to choose the words that follow it carefully. Let’s demonstrate with these two statements, “she is extremely good at her job but she isn’t punctual” and “she isn’t punctual but she is extremely good at her job”, the punctuality seems to finish in the last statement but very obvious in the first.
With the appropriate NLP classes, you can be equipped with the power to communicate and persuade using the various persuasion techniques made possible by Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Overtime, these communication and persuasion techniques have been proved very effective if applied accurately.
